Today’s PS Challenge image comes from our backyard, the rose bush along the wall behind my shop. I love this little rose bush and the blooms are beautiful. I have to work on my photography skills for this flower – so far I haven’t made the shot I have in my mind. I decided to share this, however, so just ENJOY! PHOTOROGR
A couple days ago, my lovely bride and I decided to take a hike along the Carson River Trail. I hiked the trail a couple months ago, before the mosquitoes hatched and gained air superiority along the River. Since I didn’t have insect repellent in the PhotoRanger, we cut the hike short to preserve my legs. For the first time ever, someone (meaning the mosquitoes) thought I was sweeter than Susan. Please note – I placed a bottle of Off in the PhotoRanger so I’m not caught unarmed again!
While we were on the trail, however, I grabbed a quick shot of the River with the Sierras in the background. The ‘vee’ in the water to the right of the big tree is a Cinnamon Teal swimming away, but trying to maintain a cool demeanor as he did so.

Today’s PS Challenge include 2 images (landscape and detail) taken at Jake’s Wetlands in Minden NV. I found these Daisies on a hillside along the path on the southwest side of the wetlands. The view of Jobs Peak and the Sierras in the background is a bonus!

My lovely bride and I took a drive yesterday. Our original intent was to take a hike on the Carson River Trail, but the mosquitoes overtook us a short distance in and we called it off. We drove around the ‘West Loop,’ which is my name for the area west of US 395 in the Carson Valley. To our surprise and delight, Mottsville Lane was open (it’s been underwater frequently this Spring!). We found this image on a road south of Mottsville.
I explored some of the wonderful features of my PowerShot G9 to make this image. I mounted the camera on a tripod, set it to bracket exposures, and used the time delay to minimize camera movement. I assembled the HDR in Adobe Camera Raw (a very cool new feature in ACR!) and finished the processing in On1 PhotoRAW.

Happy May Day every one! (I’m celebrating Spring in the United States, not the USSR’s holiday – just to clarify.) Temperatures are moving upward, so it’s shorts weather. Also time to start those outside projects that have waited until winter came to a close. I have 6 cy of soil to move, then the planting, topped off with ground cover rock. We’ll see how motivated I am.
Today’s PS Challenge image comes from Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City, taken during our visit on Saturday. This is an old sign advertising a show at Piper’s, on display in the lobby area. The light was terrible and the best view obscured by its placement on the wall opposite the grand staircase. I bracketed exposures to improve my chances of getting a good, usable image. I processed the bracketed exposures in Photomatix, then cleaned things up in PhotoShop. I had to ‘warp’ the image to make it fully presentable, due to the camera optics and combining the exposures. I like the result.

Today’s PS Challenge image is representative of many things. First, I took it ‘selfie-style,’ which is a big challenge because I don’t take good selfies and the PowerShot G9 doesn’t have a forward camera setting. Second, my lovely bride and I were on the V&T Railroad just leaving the Eastgate Station (east of Carson City) and heading for Virginia City. We were celebrating Susan’s retirement and had a wonderful time. The Carson Valley Pops played well and Piper’s Opera House was an excellent setting! Last, it’s the end of April – 2017 is a third of the way over! Temperatures are starting to rise and I’m going to mow my lawn for the first time this year today. Wahoo?
But anyway – this little camera continues to amaze me with its simplicity, complexity, and most important, its ability to make great images – even of me ‘selfie-style.’
