PS Challenge – August 26, 2017

It’s been too long since I posted, but I have an excuse. My lovely bride and I recently celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary and we took a trip to Yosemite National Park to celebrate. We timed the trip around a Night Photography Workshop I was taking. I hadn’t been to Yosemite since I was 2 years old, so that trip didn’t really count for me.

We had a wonderful trip and, except for the smoke from a fire at the south end of the Park, enjoyed the grandeur and beauty. Picture taking was a challenge, but I think I got some good stuff – I’m just beginning to process the images.

Today’s PS Challenge image comes from the Merced River and was taken at dawn, the last shooting of the workshop. The smoke gave the sky an orange cast, and I loved how it colored the water of the river.

Today’s PS Challenge image comes from the Kinney Reservoir, taken a couple weeks ago on my adventure up CA 4 to Ebbett’s Pass.

As usual, I bracketed exposures, merged and toned in Adobe Camera Raw, then edited in PhotoShop with a Nik Color Efex filter. The image was made mid-day, just after lunch.

PS Challenge – July 22, 2017

Today’s PS Challenge image comes from the edge of the Desolation Wilderness, along the Pyramid Creek Trail. I was out the other day scouting photo locations – scouting because the fires near Yosemite National Park are covering our area with smoke. I tried some things but had very low expectations due to the smoky conditions. A couple images surprised me and I was able to make something useful of them.

The waterfall in the background is Horsetail Falls, easily accessible from US 50 on the west side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

PS Challenge – June 15, 2017

Today’s PS Challenge comes from Lake Tahoe. My lovely bride and I took a drive to the Lake yesterday and hiked around the Taylor Creek Visitor’s Center. We didn’t do the Rainbow Trail – we took the Lake of the Sky Trail to the Kiva Beach area.

For those of you who don’t recognize her, this is my lovely bride. She looks very relaxed since she retired and is sporting a new hairdo!

Today’s PS Challenge image comes from East Valley Road in the Carson Valley. A couple days ago, we had a nice storm front come through, bringing cooler temperatures and some interesting and gorgeous skies. This is a view of Genoa Peak and Duane Bliss Peak, in the Sierras and forming the northwest border of the Carson Valley.

I couldn’t resist processing the image in black and white to bring out the drama.

A couple days ago, my lovely bride and I decided to take a hike along the Carson River Trail. I hiked the trail a couple months ago, before the mosquitoes hatched and gained air superiority along the River. Since I didn’t have insect repellent in the PhotoRanger, we cut the hike short to preserve my legs. For the first time ever, someone (meaning the mosquitoes) thought I was sweeter than Susan. Please note – I placed a bottle of Off in the PhotoRanger so I’m not caught unarmed again!

While we were on the trail, however, I grabbed a quick shot of the River with the Sierras in the background. The ‘vee’ in the water to the right of the big tree is a Cinnamon Teal swimming away, but trying to maintain a cool demeanor as he did so.

Today’s PS Challenge include 2 images (landscape and detail) taken at Jake’s Wetlands in Minden NV. I found these Daisies on a hillside along the path on the southwest side of the wetlands. The view of Jobs Peak and the Sierras in the background is a bonus!

PS Challenge – May 17, 2017

I took a drive down US 395 past Topaz Lake (lots of water in Topaz, but still room for more!) and over Monitor Pass this morning. Lots of snow and water in places I haven’t seen water before – gorgeous views everywhere. A little chilly and occasionally breezy, but a nice drive and shoot nonetheless.

This image was taken from the east side of Monitor Pass, looking southeast. I thought you might enjoy a change of view (an image that’s not Jobs Peak).
